the becoming

Life is a process of becoming. A caterpillar transforms into a butterfly. A maggot mutates into a fly. A teen morphs into adulthood. Creation is in a process of transforming, mutating, morphing—becoming.

This becoming, however, is harder than it seems—especially for young leaders in the church. As young leaders, there is a burning God-given desire in all of us to be more than we are today. My pastor calls this desire a “holy dissatisfaction.” We are content in our relationship with Jesus Christ and His blessings, but we are not satisfied at our current level of productivity. Our talents and abilities are destined by God to grow into maturity and perform at an optimum level, but in our current state we are unrefined and awkward. We are the caterpillar inching our way around, nibbling on leaves, anxiously waiting to be transformed into something more . . . more beautiful.

So we wait. We live. We learn. We lead. Aspirations exasperate. Potential frustrates. Pressures mount. If only we could rush the process. If only we could hit fast forward and skip to the good part of the story. If only we weren’t so young with so much to learn. We are going to be stunning someday . . . right?

Yes. “He has made everything beautiful in its time” (Ecclesiastes 3.11, NKJV).

Did you know that it only takes a maggot six days to mutate into a fly? A caterpillar, on the other hand, usually emerges from a cocoon after a year-long process of change. Depending on weather conditions some caterpillars stay in the cocoon two to five years before becoming a butterfly.

Maggot + days = fly. Caterpillar + year(s) = butterfly.

The length of the process determines what we become. The longer we allow our lives to be shaped by our current life circumstances, the better the end result will be. When we rush this process we forgo the very cocoon that God is using to transform us.

For heaven’s sake, don’t rush the process.

Believe me; I know it’s tempting to want to rush the process. I feel like I’m walking in waste waist-deep manure most of the time—it’s hard to move forward and everything around me stinks. I just hold my nose and endure the stench. With patience and persistence Jesus will somehow makes sense of our efforts. Give it time.

Thankfully, God’s grace (and the grace of our followers) allows us the opportunity to lead while we’re learning. “Don’t let anyone put you down because you're young. Teach believers with your life: by word, by demeanor, by love, by faith, by integrity. Stay at your post reading Scripture, giving counsel, teaching. And that special gift of ministry you were given . . . keep that dusted off and in use” (1 Timothy 4.11-13, MSG).

This is the becoming. Be patient. Live. Learn. Lead. Become.

Destiny will be waiting.

wow this article is so powerful and true. I know I feel like that to sometimes like, "God can I please get to the exciting stuff." Also, I loved the part about the butterfly. One thing that the preacher didn't mention is that when the capteliar is in its cocoon it fights for its life. It must survive in the cocoon in order to gain the necessary strength it needs to survive outside of the cocoon. But if it can just survive the end product is amazingly beautiful[!!!] Love this article[!!!]

That was pretty deep. I LOVE using metaphors to express a thought, or explain a concept; so the metaphoric comparison between the maggot and the caterpilar was an amazing way to show how a young person must grow and mature to effectively help in leading God's kingdom. Its tough sometimes to go through the "boring" stuff right after going through a period of revelation and triumph, but those "boring" times are the best times of learning and preparation for the future, LARGER, more POWERFUL outporings of God. IM SOOOO EXCITED about what He's got in the works. Were gonna be hit harder than ever.

Thanks for the comment Evan. The "boring stuff" is where the war is fought! The problem with most of us today is that we want the VICTORY WITHOUT the STRUGGLE! But like Jacqui pointed out in her comment, it's the struggle of that butterfly getting out of the cocoon that brings the beauty that you see. The bottom line is life is work! Living involves struggles! But struggles make you stroger, better and more confident in the end! We're all in "the becoming" stage...so enjoy!

Thats so true Pastor Clack, living does involve struggle but the struggle makes us stronger. Man, It reminds me of a quote(yes, i love quotes),"Character can not be developed in ease and quiet.
Only through experience of trial and suffering can the soul be strengthened, ambition inspired, and success achieved." Which is so true, its the things that hurt us the most that make us who we are. Its in brokeness that we become TRUELY WHOLE. Its when everything around us falls that teaches us what we are, or better yet who are GOD really is. Because at the end of the day its not about us but about God and through Him we able to overcome these struggles and become who he has destined for us to be...[[[see pastor i pay attention at church...l0l]]]

Though time and the struggle make us stronger time does so much more for us. What time does is give us time to except the change that's taking place within us, we get the chance to acclimate. Look when change comes to fast you get easily overwhelmed you move along doing this doing that bam bam bam. Then you get the chance to look at yourself and think dag when did I become this? Is this really me? Then we start to resist the change because we never got the time to get used to it and accept that this is who I am becoming.
